The UK’s first Institute of Corrosion training and examination centre opens

 In E-Bulletin, Issue 19

The Gary McKenzie Training and Examination Centre, an Institute of Corrosion (ICorr) approved training and test centre for cathodic protection in reinforced concrete, on-land (buried), and marine metallic structures was officially opened this week.

Representatives from the Corrosion Prevention Association (CPA), Institute of Corrosion, Freyssinet Limited and Corrosion Control Services Limited (CCSL), who have collaborated on the development of the facility in Telford, Shropshire, were on site for the opening.

The centre is the UK’s only ICorr training and examination facility, and is named in memory of the late Gary McKenzie, Freyssinet colleague and friend to many in the industry, who sadly passed away in February.

The examination and test centre offers world-class training and testing facilities in accordance with ISO 15257:2017 competence levels of cathodic protection, on behalf of ICorr.

The following courses are available certification levels 1-3:

  • Reinforced Concrete
  • Marine and Metallic Structures
  • On-Land (Buried)

To date 21 candidates have attended courses and successfully passed the required exams to allow them to become fully certified Level 1 Data Collector/Testers, Level 2 Technicians and Level 3 Senior CP Technicians.

The development of the first and only approved ICorr training and examination centre in the UK is a credit to CCSL and Freyssinet’s forward-thinking and innovation, and to ICorr and the CRA’s commitment to best practise and standards of excellence in the industry.
